Community Connections
As part of its Dare to Discover vision the University of Alberta continues working with residents in its neighbouring communities, the City of Edmonton and the province of Alberta in a consultative process that began in 1998. Community representatives and University of Alberta staff have agreed to an established process using the following “Principles for Community Consultation”.
· The community consultation protocol is based on the fundamental principles of two-way interaction, flexibility, respect of diverse interests, openness and accountability.
· All University development is intended to provide the facilities and other resources necessary to fulfill the president’s vision. This vision relates to all of the University’s primary activities – education, research and community service.
· Ultimate decision making responsibility lies with the University’s Board of Governors. Its senior administration is charged with the dual responsibility of (a) assessing need, identifying opportunities and developing recommendations and (b) ensuring an effective consultation process and generating reliable information for the Board about community concerns.
· The University is committed to being a good neighbor. It will ensure members of the campus and surrounding communities are able to review development plans at the conceptual and more detailed stages and participate in a two-way consultation process before final recommendations are developed and decisions made.
· Through their considered input, community members will assist the University to maximize the appropriateness of proposed developments for designated sites and minimize the negative consequences for neighbouring communities. Community representatives in the consultation process will work to ensure communication of information about proposed developments to their constituents and to maximize opportunities for constituent input throughout the consultation process.
